About climate change

Climate change is the term used to describe the impact human activity and other factors have on our weather. Scientists now agree that a combination of the burning of coal, oil and gas (for transport and energy production), land clearing and agricultural practices contributes to an increase in average temperatures; a phenomenon commonly known as global warming.

This warming is thought to happen because the subsequent build up of gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide causes more of the sun’s radiation to be reflected back down to earth. This is known as the greenhouse effect, which lends its name to the term ‘greenhouse gas’.
